You can use the processing time or downtime of an appointment to squeeze in another client using Genbook's Split Appointments feature. You can create services that have built-in downtime or breaks, during which another appointment can be scheduled. In this article, we'll walk you through how to set up Split Appointments and how they work in your Calendar, from the Genbook Website and the Manager app for iPhone.

Genbook Website

1. Click Settings at the top right.

2. Click Services under Business Profile

3. Choose (or add) the service you want to split.
4. Select Split Appointment under Appointment Type and enter the following in each of the fields:

  1. Start: How long you spend with the client at the beginning of the service.
  2. Available: How long you will be away from the client (and open to take an other appointment).
  3. Finish: The amount of time you need to finish the service when you return to the client at the end of the processing or downtime.

Here's what an appointment booked for the Cupping service we just set up would look like in the Calendar.

To book an appointment during the downtime of a Split Appointment, simply click anywhere in that open space, select a service that will fit, and adjust the appointment start time as needed. Enter the customer's details as usual, and save your changes.

Here's what those two appointments would look like in our Calendar:

You can also create split appointments on an ad hoc basis directly in the calendar, even if the service you're booking isn't set up that way on its Details page. First, you'll need to click the Advanced tab in the new booking form.

Next, you'll enter the amount of time you need at the start of the appointment, the amount of time you'll have free, and the time needed to finish the service for the client.

The 20-minute time slot that's free in the middle of the above split appointment can then be booked by a client who needs a service with a 20-minute duration, or serve as the "Start" of another split appointment for the same service.

🤓 Pro tip: Don't want to use the downtime of a Split Appointment to take another client? No problem — put a "Block" there instead.

If you don't see the the "Block" option when hovering over the time slot, just click in the space. Adjust the start time and length (if needed), without editing anything else and save the appointment.

7. You'll see that the duration now lists the Start-Available-Split you set.Tap "Save" at the top right. Appointments for that service will also have that detail on them when you create them, or view their details.

Here's how a split appointment will look in your calendar by itself, and with another appointment "nested" during the Available time.
